SUMMARY:MS5G - Building Expertise for Sustainable Scientific Software in H
igh-Performance Computing: Bridging Training Gaps in the Research Communit
 y
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this minisymposium is to explore how training initi
atives in sustainable open-source scientific software development foster c
ollaboration among researchers and developers. Scientific software develop
ment requires motivated, multi-talented individuals capable of balancing t
echnical excellence with scientific rigor. However, the absence of standar
d curricula for scientists developing software, undefined career paths, an
d scarce resources for onboarding and maintaining sustainable software mak
e recruiting and nurturing new talent particularly challenging. The scope
and complexity of software skills required are growing rapidly, with softw
are increasingly interdependent on evolving hardware. Traditional academic
education often fails to adequately equip researchers for developing sust
ainable, efficient scientific software. In response, multiple initiatives
have emerged over recent years to bridge this gap and provide advanced tra
ining to researchers from varied career stages and disciplines. We have in
vited representatives from some of these initiatives to talk about the top
ic from their perspective and discuss how we can foster collaborations bet
ween the training, researcher and developer communities. We welcome resear
chers of all scientific domains, and representatives of all training and s
cientific software developer communities to join us.\n\nHPC Training Stand
ardization and Certification\n\nStandardization is one cornerstone in Trai
