SUMMARY:Advances in High-Performance Computational Modeling for Solid Mech
anics: From Slender Structures to Architected Materials
DESCRIPTION:Bianca Giovanardi (TU Delft)\n\nGiven their pervasive occurren
ce in science and engineering, obtaining solutions to Partial Differential
Equations (PDEs) is of paramount importance across multiple domains. Howe
ver, numerically solving PDEs often presents significant challenges, espec
ially in multi-physics contexts or for problems requiring simultaneous hig
h-resolution and large-scale analysis. In this talk, I will present instan
ces of real-world problems in science and engineering where the synergy of
advanced numerical methods, state-of-the-art software implementations, an
d high-performance hardware enable the high-fidelity modeling of complex p
hysics at scale. Case studies include fracture and fragmentation of large-
scale structures under impact loading, the complex dynamics of flexible fi
bers sedimenting in viscous flow, and the large-deformation mechanics of n
ovel architected materials exposed to extreme environments. In each case,
the resulting simulations provide unique physical insights that would be o
therwise unattainable, thus enabling analyses of engineering significance.
